Historic Cheddar & Wells

Description

Combine the dramatic natural beauty of Somerset with the classic charm of its smallest city on this captivating day trip. Your adventure begins at the breathtaking Cheddar Gorge, where you will have a couple of hours to soak in the atmosphere of England’s largest gorge and its spectacular limestone scenery. During your visit, you might choose to wander through the charming village shops, enjoy a spot of lunch or a traditional cream tea at one of the local tearooms, or perhaps visit the Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company to see exactly how their famous cheese is crafted. For those feeling active, a short walk to take in the towering cliffs or a quick look at the entrance of the famous caves is a wonderful way to experience the scale of the landscape before we travel on to our next stop.

Once we arrive in the historic city of Wells, you will have another couple of hours to explore its stunning medieval architecture and wonderfully peaceful atmosphere. You might begin by visiting Wells Cathedral, often described as one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the country, where you can marvel at the west front's incredible collection of medieval sculptures and search for the famous 14th-century astronomical clock hidden inside. A stroll along Vicars' Close is a perfect way to spend some time, as it is the only complete medieval street left in England with all its buildings still intact. You could also wander through the tranquil grounds of the Bishop’s Palace and Gardens, surrounded by a moat where the resident swans have become famous for ringing a bell whenever they are feeling a bit hungry. Please do keep in mind that entry to specific attractions such as the Cathedral, Bishop's Palace, or the various cave and gorge explorer tickets will be at your own cost.
